Statement South of the Border is a quirky travel attraction off I-95/US301 in South Carolina. Originally a beer stand in the 1950s, its carnival-like architecture and Mexican theme make it irresistible to photograph.
I was attracted to the graphic details, bright color and strong sunlight on a cold winter day. During the summer vacation travel season SOB is crowded, but in the winter it was mostly deserted.
These photographs were the impetus for a later “Off Season” series.
